By Air
Matarangi has an excellent airstrip, only 20 minutes flying time from Auckland, Hamilton or Tauranga Airports. Both commercial and charter flights are available. Great Barrier Airlines have regular flights times between Auckland and Matarangi on Fridays and Sundays, with extra flights in summer. Christian Aviation from Ardmore also have a 24-hour on-call service, with aircrafts available for a range of uses, from corporate charters and scenic/tourism flights, to urgent courier.
By Road
Go Kiwi Shuttles offer an efficient and regular service between Matarangi and Auckland. They also service Rotorua, Tauranga, Hamilton and Waitomo and provide tours around the Peninsula that include Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove and Hahei. Driving to Matarangi offers some spectacular New Zealand landscape; from the north Waikato farmland beneath the bush clad Bombay Hills to the stunningly scenic road from Thames to The Coromandel. During the summer, the hills on this coast blaze with flowering Pohutakawa.
From Auckland to Thames
Traveling south on the Auckland Motorway, turn left at the bottom of the Bombay Hills onto SH2, (signposted to Tauranga and Thames). Take SH25 on the left to Thames/Coromandel. Follow signs to Thames, crossing a single lane wooden bridge at Kopu. Thames is a few kilometers up this road.
From Hamilton to Thames
Take SH26 north to Kopu, where you join SH25. This road continues north to Thames.
From Thames to Matarangi
From Thames, continue up the beautiful coastline SH25 through Thornton Bay, Te Puru, Waiomu, Tapu and Te Mata, travel inland for around 20 minutes then take a right hand turn (still SH25) signposted: Whitianga, Whangapoua, Matarangi and Kuaotunu (do not take the 309 road to Whitianga). Stunning views of the eastern Coromandel await you at the top of the hill. Drive past the first left-hand turn (to Whangapoua), going on about 8kms until the Matarangi signs. |
